last night, i was in lab until pretty late so t drove up to the city and we had dinner at suppenkuche, this german place in my old 'hood hayes valley. i had forgotten how crazy crowded restaurants in the city are on weekend nights. i got there first and was told the wait was 45 min. funnily enough, by the time we found a parking spot for t's car (he arrived 10 min later than me), it was 45 min. so we felt like VIPs as we strode into the restaurant and got seated immediately.
after, we went back to berkeley and went to this bar thalassa. i had thought i've never been there before but once i got there, i realized i had been there once before with jcruelty, captainb, etc. as we were waiting at the bar to order drinks, this guy sitting at the bar tapped us on the shoulder.
man: hey, you guys want to do a shot with me??
a: ummm....
t: we already ordered our drinks....
man: c'mon! i'll buy! i just don't wanna do a shot by myself! kamikaze??
how can you refuse when someone wants to buy you a shot just because they don't want to drink alone? the shot was not a shot -- it was 4 times the volume of a regular shot. i ended up sipping mine and it was quite refreshing. after we thanked the stranger, we found a small table to people-watch and i started wondering if we should have bought the stranger another shot in return. but honestly, we didn't want to drink that much.
this morning, after brunch, we walked around hayes valley a bit more. there's this new store called true sake there now, that sells nothing but sake. lots and lots of fancy sake. prices aren't too bad, according to t. and they offer sake tastings. i guess sake is becoming trendy. weirdly enough, the lady working at the store today looked really familiar to me and she also recognized me. turns out she used to work at sapient too, so we small-talked a bit. i didn't know her at sapient though, so it's not like we had a lot of catching up to do. afterwards, t asked me if i either don't like her or don't know her and i asked why. he said i wasn't being too friendly. :( bleh. i guess this weekend is not one of my sociable weekends (or do i even have those??).
after that exciting weekend update, here's pictorial evidence that the next andy goldsworthy may be residing right here in berkeley.
