for the past month or two, about every week or so, i would hear very loud noises coming from the apartment upstairs from me. and these weren't just loud walking or hopping or vacuum cleaning. there's distinctively a man yelling, using a variety of colorful cursing phrases. and every so often, i would hear a small woman's voice. they usually happen late at night too, when i'm about to or have already gone to bed.
a couple of times, these "conversations" come with plenty of loud thumping and noises of things hitting against walls. i thought about going upstairs to ask if everything's ok, but let's face it, i'm not that brave. a few times, i contemplated calling the police but didn't know if that would be the right thing to do or if i would be wrongly accusing someone.
finally, today, as i was putting my laundry in the washer, i noticed that two of the apartment managers were in the office, so i got up the nerve to ask them about this. not only is the yelling and cursing disturbing and distressful to me, but i was seriously convinced that some sort of abuse was going on. thankfully, they confirmed that i'm not crazy and that they know about this problem.
apparently, there's only one guy who lives upstairs and he is schizophrenic. on a good day, he's just a mild-mannered, software-engineer-type guy. but on a bad day, he adopts two personas: one of an abusive husband who is very very mean and the other of the abused wife. so that explains the yelling and thumping.
the apartment managers said they'll write him a letter and that the last time they wrote him about disturbing his neighbors, it worked for about a year. but i keep thinking...is a letter really the fix? is he actually abusing and hurting himself and shouldn't he be seeing some sort of psychiatrist?
